Tips on Buying A Puppy
Red Flags when searching for you next puppy
There are breeders who sell Puppies with full “Registration”
for more money, regardless of the quality or health of the pup, this is not how it works with a reputable breeder.
Be wary of Continental Kennel Club registration as it is not recognized as a pure breed affiliation. Puppy
mills use many registries to fool the buyer.
Pretty websites do not make a breeder reputable nor does an AKC dog. Not all AKC
dogs are good quality-remember “Fido” in the pet shop down the road is AKC registered and he comes from a Puppy
mill. Also buying from Pet Stores only supports Puppy mills and Back Yard breeders, that is who supplies
the stores despite the store stating the pup comes from a home or a local breeder.
The Breeder tells you all her dogs are healthy
and there are no health issues in her lines. All lines/breeds carry issues and a good breeder will be able
to discuss this with you. They also should be able to PROVE their health testing with paperwork from each
source. Don’t purchase unless you have proof of the parents health testing-to include at least for
Cresteds-Cerf Exams, Optigen, Patella and heart.
Sells "Show Quality" while they have never shown themselves, or all the puppies in the
litter are show quality-this is false information.
Dogs that are bred every season
The breeder
does not ask questions about the puppy’s potential new home. Do you have kids,
a yard, any experience with a puppy. There are no contracts or very limited ones for the health and life
of this puppy. Reputable breeders will ask questions and will also take their dogs back over its life time
if your situation changes at any time.
Red Flags to breeders of multiple breeds.
Be careful of dogs from different registries that are not AKC and also International Champion status,
a true International Champion status which means competing in differents parts of the world, not local weekends in the United
States. These are ploys to make you think the dog is of greater quality.
Remember you are adding a new member to your family for many years.
Wouldn't you want to be able to talk to the breeder if an emergency arises
or you need help.
